JAMES BAY - IF YOU EVER WANT TO BE IN LOVE
Throughout the whole video there is a very limited colour pallet of sepia tones, this gives an aged feel to the video, normally it is a black and white based colour pallet meaning this particular video challenges the conventions of an indie music video. Blocking has a massive part in this music video, one of the first shots we see, is the audiences hands in the air and their back with James Bay on the stage higher than them. This shows that he is the most important person in the video and that the focus is purely on him. His costume is fairly basic, he wears a black leather jacket, black hat and black trousers, black boots and what looks to be a burgundy jumper with a print on it. It is conventional for the artist to wear dark clothing within an indie music video, this is something that we wish to use in our own music video, fitting the conventions of the indie genre. The use of the musical instruments are heavily emphasized and focused on throughout the video, showing that they are just an important as the artist himself, we also wish to do this with our video as we won’t be showing the artists faces, we want to focus on the instruments.
MISE EN SCENE

The camera work seems to be handheld throughout the video, this gives a relaxed feel to the video, and wants the audience to feel at ease while watching the video. There is a lot of pans used throughout the video, of James Bay, the audience, the band members and instruments, this shows just how many people are there with the artist and how liked he is, also it is more interesting to the audience rather than just using cuts. There is low angle shots used of the artist from the beginning when we see his name printed onto the drum. Long shots are used to show the whole gig environment and again to show the amount of people that are there, making the viewer want to be there as well. Finally zooms are used throughout to show every aspect of the video and also to show the emotion on people’s faces, whether it is James Bay’s or the audience or the other band members.
CAMERA WORK

EDITING
There is quick cuts used within the video to go along with the beat of the song, this makes the video interesting to watch, this is conventional for an indie song to do this, it is also something that we wish to use in our own video, as it is important to keep the viewer engaged with the video. Speed manipulation is used of the audience and the artist himself, whether it is slow motion or the footage has been fastened to give a fun feel, it also benefits the song, for example when the song goes slower the footage can sometimes be seen to be slowed down as well. This is something we will definitely consider using in our video but only use it when it will benefit and add effect to the song.
