LIP SYNCING

What is lip syncing?

Lip syncing is when either an actor or singer move their lips silently in synchronisation with a pre-recorded soundtrack. It could either be used in live performances or visual productions such as music videos, adverts or film

When it comes to live performances, the use of lip-syncing is used as a shortcut instead of the artist actually performing. This helps the artist do other things during their performance such as dancing to entertain the audience more and show off more of their perceived talent. However, it can be considered controversial when an artist chooses to do this. Within music videos, the lip syncing is mostly part of the post production phase, where they will add the lyrics to the song to match the artist lip sync in the video. When this is done successfully, it is very effective and realistic.

Lip Syncing is primarily used to make things easier for the artist and to make them sound better than they actually are (live performances). Whereas this is different for music videos, because the artist needs to look and sound the best to make the video sell and appeal to their target audience. The reason why it is seen as controversial in live performances is because it shows that the particular artist isnt actually as good as the recorded tracks, and shows a lack of commitment to their fans that have paid to see them perform live.

But why is it used?
Our chosen lip sync song...

My group mates (Lorna Brett-Greenachre and Amy Erkin) and I decided to come together one lesson to discuss the possibilities of which song to use to make our preliminary lip sync video. We wanted to do an old school song, which many people would know, by doing this we made it less complex to lip sync to and to keep the audience entertained. Finally, we decided to lip sync to 'Wannabe' by 'The Spice Girls' We thought this would be a very fun to do, and play with each of the spice girls characters. We also wanted to use a sports theme which would make the video more entertaining for the audience to watch.
