RECORD LABLES

UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP

Universal Music Group is an American worldwide music corporation that is also a subsidiary of French media conglomerate Vivendi. Universal represents a lot of artists of which are at a high social status, and participates in a lot of work for charities and other organisations, constantly promoting their band. They aim to a mass audience especially to online users of social media.

The Universal Music Group is considered the world’s leading Music Company. The company is a major record label that owns multiple brands including, Abbey Road Studios, Virgin EMI Studios and Island and many many more.

The record label signs a range of artists and bands which are all different genres of music. This is reflected in their logo, the brands logo is a world which connotes unity and equality which in effect also represents the artists which they sign.

CREATION RECORDS

Creation Records was a British independent record label leaded by Alan McGee. It was then sold to Sony after being unsuccessful, the company then signed Oasis – a globally well-known band. The logo for the music record company is blue, red and white which connotes British heritage which can show McGee’s dedication to Britain, the shape is unusual and this could connote the type of artists which they sign – individual, unique and original.

The record label signs artists with the genres of Alternative Rock. Post-Punk, Indie Pop, Shoe Gazing and Britpop. These genres are similar to our group song which comes under Indie Pop/Rock, meaning this could be a possibility to use for our music video.

FOREFRONT RECORDS

Forefront Records is a subsidiary of EMI. The record label is known for signing contemporary Christian music and Christian rock music, currently it is working on an artist called Toby Mac. Their main offices are based in America. The logo for Forfefront Records is quite simplistic, however it doesn’t have any relation to the company and gives no connotation of how the company wants to be represented. I don’t think this company would be suitable for our chosen song, due to the genre of which the company signs.

GLASSNOTE RECORDS

Glassnote entertainment group is an independent music company founded by Daniel Glass. The record label is known for directly known for marketing mainly Indie bands and artists. The company looks for individual and unique musicians that want to take charge of their own career. They encourage individuality and have created a strong internship mentoring programme so that musicians can reach their fans through strong links with media and touring.

'Glassnote focuses on what we do best: finding talent, creating music, and bringing it to the audience. By having fewer artists with a high level of focus and continuing to leverage Daniel Glass’s unparalleled relationships in the entertainment industry, each Artist receives the resources required to reach their full potential.' - Glassnote Website

They are a major record label that are based in New York but have offices around the world including London and Toronto. They contract many indie bands including Two Door Cinema Club and Munford and Suns which are popular across many countries. The logo for Glassnote is simplistic in its design as it only uses black and white colours with a basic font. Although simple, it is visually interesting, it has a medium sized music note embedded with the letter ‘G’. This is the most recognisable as a record label because of the use of the music note.

XL RECORDS

XL Records are an English independent record label that was established in 1989 and are indie, electronic and dance genre focused.  In the early 90‘s the label was primarily focused on producing and distributing dance orientated tracks. This later changed due to them being willing to work with more eccentric and experimental artists. They currently have partnerships with artists such as ‘Tyler and the Creator.’ In 2010 the label released ‘Vampire Weekend’s’ album ‘Contra’ which was the band’s first album to reach number one on the US Billboard charts. In 2012, XL Records became ‘Label of the Year’ due to their release of Adele’s ‘21’ album. Similar to other record labels, their logo is simplistic, clean and professional looking with the black and white colours. This could be an option for our chosen song as it would fit nicely with the genres which XL Records sign.
